OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/22/2023, shortly before 10:00 p.m., Madison County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the Oakfield Subdivision near Canton after receiving a domestic disturbance call involving 24-year-old Laddarius Johnson and his estranged girlfriend. The incident began at a residence on East Buttonwood Lane after the woman reportedly told Johnson to leave.

According to investigators, Johnson shot his estranged girlfriend in both legs. Two of her friends, a man and 34-year-old Tiara Scott, came to assist her. Police alleged that Johnson shot both of them near the entrance to the subdivision. Scott was fatally wounded, while the man survived and was able to drive away from the immediate area.

Deputies arrived and pursued Johnson through the subdivision toward the neighborhood clubhouse and swimming pool. Police reported that Johnson shot another person during the incident and that three people altogether were shot before the confrontation with deputies.

Near the clubhouse, Johnson and Madison County deputies exchanged gunfire. Reporting based on law-enforcement sources indicated that a deputy shot and wounded Johnson during the exchange.

The confrontation ended in front of the subdivision swimming pool. Madison County Coroner Alex Breeland said preliminary findings indicated that after exchanging gunfire with deputies, Johnson shot himself. Johnson died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Initial Mississippi Bureau of Investigation information described Johnson as having been fatally injured after presenting a weapon at deputies, resulting in some early news reports describing his death as a fatal police shooting. Subsequent information from the Madison County coroner established that Johnson died by suicide after the exchange of gunfire with deputies.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation investigated the police gunfire and announced that its findings would be submitted to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office for review.
