On July 14, 2025, deputies from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office responded to multiple reports of an armed man at the popular Fort Custer Recreation Area near Augusta, Michigan. The situation prompted a large-scale evacuation of the campground and beach area around 5:00 p.m., displacing dozens of visitors and campers for public safety.
Law enforcement established a perimeter and deployed negotiators to engage with the man, who had barricaded himself inside his vehicle parked within the recreation area. Despite ongoing negotiations spanning several hours, the man remained uncooperative and ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the vehicle.
