On 07/28/2025, Shane Devon Tamura opened fire in Midtown Manhattan at 52nd Street and Park Avenue, killing four people—including off-duty NYPD Officer Didarul Islam—and wounding several others. Armed with an M4-style rifle and wearing body armor, Tamura carried a note referencing Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and requesting his brain be studied. Police stated he had prior psychiatric hospitalizations in Nevada. As NYPD officers closed in, Tamura fatally shot himself.
