OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

At approximately 2:37 p.m. on July 30, 2025, Springfield Police were dispatched to a business in the Gateway Street–Beltline Road area for reports of a disorderly individual. An officer located Daniel A. Kahn near Gateway Street and Kruse Way, where he allegedly brandished two knives and threatened to fight the officer. The officer called for backup. Kahn then stabbed two officers, inflicting significant injuries. Oregon State Police troopers arrived to assist. During the arrest, a Springfield officer fatally shot Kahn. Officers administered emergency care, but Kahn died at the scene despite life-saving measures.
Nearby residents described the scene—one witness saw approximately 10–15 officers run toward a car wash after hearing what they believed were gunshots. Another noted a person standing in the street before a chase began. The shooting triggered activation of the Lane County Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team (IDFIT), with protocols initiated including critical incident leave for the involved officer and a multimodal review by the District Attorney’s Office.
In a public statement, Kahn’s father shared that Daniel had struggled with long-term mental illness, had traveled from Texas seeking treatment, and expressed in their final conversation a deep desire to go to Jerusalem along with an invitation to play online chess together.
