OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

At approximately 6:30 a.m. on July 30, 2025, the Gary Police Department SWAT Team executed a narcotics search warrant in a residence on the 600 block of Adams Street, prompted by community reports of drug activity. During the operation, David Martin exited the rear of the building brandishing a firearm and “engaged officers with a firearm,” at which point SWAT officers opened fire and fatally shot him. Neighbors described hearing a loud explosion followed by rapid gunfire. The Lake County Coroner’s Office ruled the death a homicide by multiple gunshot wounds, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, including detectives and CSI teams, has taken charge of the investigation.
