OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On July 31, 2025, Rochester Police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man attempting to break into vehicles in the 19th Ward. At approximately 7:36 p.m., officers encountered Akintunde Campbell on Ernestine Street. When an officer attempted to detain him, Campbell reportedly knocked the officer to the ground and began to walk away. He then turned back, pulled a 9mm handgun from his hoodie, and refused commands to drop the weapon. Two officers opened fire, fatally striking him. A loaded 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene. The New York State Attorney General’s Office is investigating, with review support from the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office.
