At approximately 5:15 p.m. on August 2, 2025, Columbus police were conducting an investigation near 13th Street and 30th Avenue when Lauree Jankowski allegedly attacked an officer with a knife. Another officer discharged their firearm and shot her. Officers attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. The Nebraska State Patrol is conducting an outside investigation. As required by Nebraska state law, the case will be presented to a grand jury for review.
