OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/05/2025 at approximately 5:15 p.m., Peoria Police officers responded to a report of a suspicious man armed with a wooden bat near Glen Oak Avenue and Prospect Road. Upon arrival, officers encountered Brandon M. Lewis, who was actively wielding the bat and struck one officer with it. One officer deployed a Taser in an attempt to subdue Lewis, which proved ineffective. Subsequently, another officer opened fire, delivering a fatal gunshot. Officers immediately arrested Lewis and provided emergency aid, but he became unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Peoria County Coroner confirmed that Lewis died from a single gunshot wound. The Illinois State Police are conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. This case will also undergo review by the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office to determine legal outcomes.
No officers sustained life-threatening injuries, although the officer struck by the bat was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
