On 07/07/2024, police detained 33-year-old Nathan Bradford Smith outside a Motel 6 in Coos Bay, Oregon. He was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis and was placed in the back of a patrol car with the windows up. Officer Benjamin Martin went inside the station, where he watched TikTok videos and exchanged intimate text messages, while Smith remained in the car for an extended period. When Martin returned, Smith was unresponsive and struggling to breathe. Narcan was administered, and paramedics recorded his body temperature at 107°F. He was transported to a hospital, where he died. A federal wrongful death lawsuit filed by his family alleges negligence and deliberate indifference by the involved officers.
