OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/16/2023, Nampa Police Department officers responded after St. Luke’s Nampa Medical Center reported that 37-year-old Adam Michael Trejo had left the hospital and was running into traffic. Nampa Interim Police Chief Curt Shankel subsequently said Trejo appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis.

After leaving the hospital, Trejo unsuccessfully attempted to take a vehicle in the hospital parking lot. He then entered O’Crab restaurant on North Marketplace Boulevard and took two knives before leaving the restaurant.

Trejo went to the neighboring Chick-fil-A drive-through, where police alleged that he attempted another carjacking, and then continued to the nearby McDonald’s parking lot. A Nampa police officer confronted him there.

Initial police statements incorrectly claimed that Trejo moved toward the officer with a knife. The Canyon County Sheriff’s Office later corrected that account after investigators reviewed witness statements and video evidence. According to the revised police account, Trejo moved toward a nearby civilian while armed with knives, and the Nampa officer opened fire.

The officer shot Trejo, who died at the scene. The Canyon County Critical Incident Task Force, led by the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office, investigated the killing. Investigators obtained multiple civilian videos, business surveillance footage and witness statements. The completed investigation was designated for submission to the prosecutor for review.

The shooting officer had more than five years of law-enforcement experience at the time he killed Trejo, including approximately one year with the Nampa Police Department. The officer was placed on paid administrative leave after the shooting
