OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/16/2023, at approximately 7:20 p.m., Fresno County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers received a 911 call from a woman at a residence in the 600 block of Marie Street in Mendota. The woman reported that 31-year-old Javiel Lainez Zavala was inside her home and threatening to kill her. Zavala and the woman had been in an on-and-off dating relationship.

Mendota Police Department officers entered the residence while the woman remained on the emergency call. According to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, officers encountered Zavala on top of the woman and allegedly attempting to stab her with a knife. The woman suffered injuries to her hand during the attack.

At approximately 7:28 p.m., one Mendota police officer opened fire, striking Zavala at least once. Officers administered first aid and arranged emergency transportation. Zavala died in the ambulance while being transported to the hospital.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit took over the investigation at the request of the Mendota Police Department. The incident was recorded as Mendota Police Department case 230002265.1 at 607 Marie Street.
