Keene Police stopped a vehicle containing a man and a woman for undisclosed reasons. The woman exited, but David Ward stayed inside armed with a gun. Officers secured the area and brought in the New Hampshire State Police SWAT unit. Troopers surrounded Ward’s vehicle in tactical gear, and a shootout broke out during which multiple rounds struck the SWAT armored vehicle. Five troopers fired into the car and fatally struck Ward.
