On 08/14/2025, shortly after midnight, Kansas City police attempted to stop a stolen Hyundai Tucson near Independence Avenue and Brooklyn Avenue. The driver continued northbound on Wabash Avenue at high speed. At Lexington Avenue and Wabash Avenue, police chased the SUV through a stop sign when the collided with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Police claim they called off the chase shortly before the crash, but it occurred imminently less than a quarter-mile from the termination point. A right rear-seat passenger of the Jeep was ejected and later died at the hospital. The Jeep’s driver and three other passengers, including a juvenile, sustained critical injuries. Two occupants of the stolen SUV were seriously hurt, and one escaped injury. The incident has drawn scrutiny over whether police truly disengaged before the fatal crash.
