On 08/17/2025, around 9:46 p.m., an off-duty NYPD officer was outside a residential building at West 173rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue in Washington Heights when two men on mopeds approached. One of the men, identified as 30-year-old Lahione Soto, reportedly asked a question before pulling a firearm. The officer drew his service weapon and fired multiple rounds, striking Soto in the chest. He was transported to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police recovered a loaded 9mm handgun and stolen items from Soto, who had committed at least three armed robberies within 15 minutes before the encounter. The officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The second man on a moped fled and remains at large. The NYPD and city officials confirmed this was the department’s third police-involved shooting in five days.
