OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/07/2025, just after 1 a.m., Orange Beach Police attempted to stop a 2015 Hyundai Sonata driven by 56-year-old Richard G. Holt of Cocoa, Florida, for suspected DUI and reckless driving. Holt refused to stop, and police escalated a chase that reached speeds over 100 mph. Officers allegedly called off the chase about 2.5 miles before the end of Alabama Highway 182. Immediately after that, Holt’s vehicle struck a concrete retaining wall near a guard shack in Gulf Shores. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is conducting an independent investigation.
