On 08/20/2025, around midnight, St. Ann police attempted a traffic stop after Troy Hamilton allegedly did not stop at a stop sign near St. Charles Rock Road and North and South Avenue. Officers escalated a chase, deploying a GPS tracking device to follow the vehicle to the 3300 block of Welsberg Drive. Hamilton ran from the car and onto the porch of his home when foot-chased to his residence and engaged him in an altercation. Police claim that he had a gun and officers opened fire, killing him. A passenger in Hamilton’s car left on foot and was not immediately apprehended. His wife believes that police chased him for 30 minutes and stated to local media that she woke up to guns pointed at her and seeing her husband dying on the porch, trying to speak to her. Family members publicly questioned the necessity of the police pursuit and shooting, and local NAACP leadership called for an independent investigation.
