OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On the night of August 21, 2025, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Springfield Police and Windsor County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home at 78 Valley Street in Springfield. Upon arrival, they encountered 36‑year‑old James Crary, of Newport, New Hampshire, whose vehicle accelerated toward them. In response, officers—Officer Vincent Franchi and Deputy Bryan Jalava—opened fire, fatally striking Crary. The autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was gunshot wounds to the head. No injuries were reported among law enforcement. Both officers are now on paid leave pending standard procedure, and the Vermont Attorney General’s office will determine whether the use of deadly force was justified.
