On August 23, 2025, Erasmo Huerta Gonzalez, 38, was fatally struck by an NYPD cruiser in Flushing Meadows Corona Park on United Nations Avenue South. Witnesses said the officer behind the wheel was distracted, talking with another officer in the passenger seat, and not looking at the road. The vehicle rolled over Gonzalez with its front wheels, and bystanders heard the sound of bones breaking. Despite attempts to alert the officers, they did not stop immediately. A supervising officer nearby failed to intervene. It took paramedics about 20 minutes to extract Gonzalez from beneath the vehicle, during which his legs remained visible. He was transported to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital and pronounced dead. Gonzalez’s family was not notified until four days later and expressed anger at the lack of communication from NYPD, saying it felt like his life was not valued. The incident occurred during increased police traffic for the U.S. Open in an area of the park normally closed to cars. The New York State Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation, while the NYPD has declined to comment on witness accounts.
