On 08/25/2025, a 37-year-old man was seen firing a rifle into the water at the Dutton Island Preserve boat ramp in Atlantic Beach. After a bystander disarmed him, the man attempted to ram the couple with his vehicle, crashed on Mayport Road, and barricaded himself inside. For more than 90 minutes, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office deputies negotiated while the man remained in his car. When he opened the door and reached into a rifle case, nine deputies opened fire and killed him.
