OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On August 7, 2025, officers attempted to arrest 30-year-old Dalton Sears on a probation violation in the Dollar General parking lot on West Coffee Street in Hazlehurst. Sears threatened to cut his throat or force officers to shoot him. During the standoff, he inflicted a fatal stab wound to his neck as officers moved in. Despite efforts to intervene, he died from his injuries after being taken to Jeff Davis Hospital.
