On September 3, 2025, officers from the Independence Police Department responded to a disturbance call near East Truman Road and South Sterling Avenue. They found Gary K. Cusick, 68, seated in the back of a car. According to police reports, Cusick produced a firearm and did not comply with commands to drop it. Following that, officers shot and killed him.
