OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, 38, of Mexico, was shot and killed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Franklin Park, a suburb of Chicago near O’Hare International Airport. ICE claims Villegas-Gonzalez resisted arrest, drove into officers, and dragged one agent with his car, injuring the officer, who was hospitalized in stable condition. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital. ICE stated the officer acted according to training and law, but the family and community leaders strongly dispute the justification, saying Villegas-Gonzalez did nothing to warrant deadly force. Local witnesses reported federal agents performing CPR after the shooting. Governor JB Pritzker called for transparency and a full investigation, while immigrant rights advocates condemned ICE’s “increasingly aggressive tactics” under Operation Midway Blitz, which has targeted heavily Latino neighborhoods in Chicago. Critics argue the agency is disproportionately targeting communities of color and escalating fear rather than ensuring safety. ICE has not confirmed whether body cameras were in use during the shooting.
