OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 09/17/2025, deputies responded to reports that 77-year-old Lewis Berne was shooting a firearm outside his home and making suicidal statements. When deputies attempted verbal de-escalation, Berne refused to drop the handgun. He moved in and out of his home while continuing to hold the weapon. After he fired the gun, deputies shot and killed him. Berne was taken to Onvida Health, where he was later pronounced dead. The Yuma Regional Critical Incident Response Team is leading the investigation; deputies were placed on modified duty. No other injuries reported.
