On September 30, 2025, Eau Claire police attempted to stop a speeding vehicle, but the driver continued driving and officers escalated a pursuit. Police soon lost sight of the vehicle. Minutes later, the same car was observed traveling at a high rate of speed on North Clairemont Avenue, where it crashed and caught fire. The driver, identified as 41-year-old Alonzo Gayton, was pronounced dead at the scene.
