OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 09/28/2025, troopers and a Chemung County deputy responded to a residence on Rotary Road where 18-year-old Nathan J. Novakowski was threatening a woman with scissors. A trooper repeatedly ordered Novakowski to drop the weapon in an effort to de-escalate. Novakowski became agitated and attempted to stab the woman. The trooper opened fire, striking him fatally. The woman sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by Greater Valley Ambulance. The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the state Attorney General’s Office are investigating the incident.
