On October 2, 2025, investigators and SWAT operators executed a search warrant at 416 Ice Cream Drive in St. Pauls. A man exited a camper carrying a rifle and fired several rounds at law enforcement. Officers opened fire, and the man retreated inside. After failed negotiation attempts, tear gas was deployed, and a woman exited the camper. When SWAT entered, they found 25-year-old Joshua Caleb Hunt deceased. Another individual, Anthony C. Caldwell-Manning, 44, was arrested and charged with drug trafficking, weapons possession, and animal cruelty. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the case.
