OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On October 2, 2025, shortly before 8:00 a.m., Phoenix officers were dispatched to a residence near 6th Street and Sunland Avenue following reports of a man armed with a knife making suicidal statements. The subject, later identified as 58-year-old Victor Conrad Altamirano, emerged from the home and ran toward an officer while holding the knife overhead. Officers attempted to de-escalate using pepper balls and a 40 mm less-lethal launcher, but when these measures did not persuade him to stop, two officers discharged their firearms, striking him. Altamirano was transported to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died. The Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division is investigating the shooting.
