On October 2, 2025, deputies with the Durham County Sheriff’s Office were involved in a pursuit near the intersection of NC Highway 55 and Riddle Road. Police said the chase stemmed from a traffic violation and that street racing may have played a role. During the pursuit, the vehicle being chased by police at high speed crashed into another car in the intersection, killing a 36-year-old bystander and injuring two others. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Durham County Sheriff’s Office are jointly investigating the crash.
