On 10/15/2025, around 2:30 a.m., officers from the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and Northport Police Department shot and killed 38-year-old Matthew Matherson at the intersection of 5th Street and Bridge Avenue in Northport. Authorities said Matherson was pursued after a traffic stop attempt and spike strips were deployed to disable his vehicle. Police reported that Matherson fired a weapon, and officers opened fire, killing him at the scene. The Violent Crimes Unit is conducting the investigation.
