Around 5 a.m., Oakland police responded to a reported home break-in near Ettrick Street by the Oakland Zoo. Officers encountered former NFL running back Doug Martin at the scene. Police said a brief struggle occurred before Martin experienced a medical emergency while being detained. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Oakland Police Department stated that the involved officers were placed on paid administrative leave.
