OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 12/16/2025 the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office responded to an armed standoff at a home on Pittsboro Goldston Road that turned into a hostage situation. Deputies breached the residence out of concern for the safety of the person being held. During the incident Senior Deputy Matthew Mitchell was shot in the arm and leg and taken to the hospital with injuries from the shooting. Officers rescued the hostage and the suspect, Kevin Dean Hammer, was found dead inside the home. Officials have not yet released how he died. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the officer-involved shooting.
