OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 12/22/2025, officers from the Alpena Police Department and Michigan State Police conducted a traffic stop in Alpena Township for a reported stolen vehicle on Grant Street near Lawn Street. During the stop, a 35-year-old man in the vehicle pulled out a knife and cut an Alpena police officer, causing a laceration to the officer’s hand. In response, the officer fired his service weapon, striking the man. The man was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The injured officer was also taken to the hospital for treatment. The Michigan State Police Investigative Response Team and Crime Lab are investigating the incident, and two Alpena officers have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
