OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 12/31/2025, Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers were attempting to locate a detained individual who had left a county jail days earlier. Troopers identified a vehicle believed to be connected to that effort and initiated a traffic stop on State Road 9 near Wetumka. During the encounter, Joshua Duane Butler exited the vehicle holding a firearm and continued into a nearby pasture. Under unclear circumstances, a trooper opened fire and shot Butler. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident.
