On 03/14/2021, Angel B. Degollado was shot and killed by a deputy from the Zapata County Sheriff’s Office after a family member called law enforcement because Degollado was in distress and reportedly acting suicidal. According to reporting, Degollado had a knife and was threatening self-harm when officers arrived. During the encounter with responding deputies, shots were fired and Degollado was killed at the scene. His family expressed devastation and publicly questioned the handling of the situation, saying they had called for help for a loved one in crisis, and raised concerns about the use of force. The Texas Rangers led the subsequent investigation. No criminal charges have been announced against the officer involved.
