OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 03/16/2021, officers from the Hayward Police Department located a vehicle matching the description of one connected to a series of robberies in the East Bay in a Motel 6 parking lot on Industrial Parkway in Hayward. Officers parked unmarked vehicles in front of the car to block it in. According to released body-worn camera and security footage, the driver, later identified as 22 year old Caleb Smith, accelerated the vehicle into police cars multiple times as officers attempted to detain him. After the vehicle struck police vehicles more than once, officers fired at Smith. Smith exited the vehicle following commands but later died from his gunshot wounds. The Alameda County District Attorney’s office reviewed the shooting. A federal judge later allowed the family’s wrongful death lawsuit to proceed, finding disputed facts regarding whether officers acted with reckless disregard, but there are no known criminal charges against the officers involved in Smith’s killing.
