On 04/01/2021, police responded to a welfare check at a residence on North Street in Brighton after James Andrew Iler made a call to authorities that prompted concern for his safety. Multiple deputies from the Macoupin County Sheriff’s Office and a Brighton police officer were present. Officers remained at the residence for an extended period speaking with Iler. During the encounter, police stated that Iler was holding a knife and moved toward a deputy. A deputy opened fire, and Iler was shot and killed at the scene.
