On 04/04/2021, Birmingham police shot and killed 28 year old Desmon Montez Ray during a late-night encounter in North Birmingham. Police responded around 10:50 p.m. to a reported domestic disturbance involving two people inside a vehicle. Officers located the vehicle in the area of 9th Avenue West and chased it through the neighborhood. The pursuit ended when the vehicle struck a fence in the 200 block of 9th Avenue West. Ray exited the vehicle after the crash. During the encounter that followed, Birmingham police opened fire and killed him at the scene. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency opened an investigation into the shooting, which remained pending at the time of reporting.
