On 04/09/2021, Delta County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed 26 year old Paige Pierce Schmidt following a vehicle pursuit on Highway 92 west of Hotchkiss. Around 11:30 a.m., deputies chased a vehicle along Highway 92 approximately five miles west of town. The sheriff’s office did not disclose why deputies initiated or continued the pursuit. The pursuit ended along Highway 92, where a deputy opened fire and killed Schmidt, who was driving the vehicle. Authorities withheld details about the events immediately preceding the shooting. The Delta County District Attorney later reviewed the case and ruled the killing justified.
