On 05/19/2021, Champaign police officers responded to reports of a domestic dispute at an apartment complex on North Neil Street. Upon arriving, officers encountered Darion M. Lafayette, who was reported to be armed. According to authorities, Lafayette and officers exchanged gunfire during the encounter. Lafayette was shot and killed at the scene. A Champaign police officer was also shot during the incident and later died from their injuries. A preliminary investigation and subsequent review by the local prosecutor concluded that the officer’s use of deadly force was justified. No known charges were filed against the officers involved.
