On 05/22/2021, Adel police officers responded to reports of a stolen vehicle on Tony Street. Officers located the vehicle and saw Steve Newsome seated in the passenger seat. According to police, Newsome exited the vehicle and gunfire occurred, during which an officer was struck. Police reported that Newsome was shot multiple times and ran a short distance before officers caught up with him. Newsome was pronounced dead at the scene. No criminal charges against officers were announced in public reporting, and no final prosecutorial outcome was reported.
