On 06/25/2021, Alaska State Troopers observed a vehicle driving erratically on Airport Industrial Road in Fairbanks and initiated a traffic stop. The driver did not stop, and troopers escalated a pursuit. The pursuit ended when the vehicle stopped and Dimitri Lanahan exited. Police reported that Lanahan raised and pointed an object toward a trooper. A trooper opened fire and shot Lanahan, killing him at the scene. Lanahan was 23 years old. After the shooting, authorities stated the object was a toy weapon described in reporting as a paintball gun.
