On 06/28/2021, a Hemet police officer pulled over a vehicle in the parking lot of a hotel on West Florida Avenue that had two men inside. During the stop, the driver, whose name has been withheld in initial reporting, exited the vehicle and confronted the officer, punching him, according to police. The man broke free and ran to the rear of the hotel. The officer pursued him and was reportedly struck again after coming around a corner. A struggle ensued on the ground, during which the officer opened fire and shot the man, killing him at the scene. The victim’s age and race have not been disclosed in reporting.
