On 06/28/2021, law enforcement officers from multiple agencies were assisting with wildfire evacuations during the Lava Fire and had closed a section of roadway near US-97 and the 99-97 Cutoff outside Weed. Officers stopped a vehicle after the driver continued driving into the restricted evacuation area despite directions to avoid it. During the encounter, police reported that Soobleej Kaub Hawj Hawj pointed a firearm while speaking with officers. Officers from several agencies engaged Hawj and opened fire, killing him at the scene. Hawj was 35 years old. Authorities later stated the shooting was cleared, and no officers were charged.
