OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 09/04/2021, 39-year-old Jorge Calleres died after Fresno Police Department officers used a Taser, took him to the ground, handcuffed and restrained him during an arrest in the 1700 block of South Karen Avenue. Calleres developed breathing and other medical problems while restrained and was transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m.
.
The encounter followed an alleged series of violent incidents earlier that day. Fresno County authorities alleged Calleres shot his former girlfriend in the face at her residence near Golden State Boulevard and Dinuba Avenue. Police further alleged that he then took a vehicle containing a mother and her four children and drove toward Fresno. The family escaped after one of the children reportedly pretended to have an asthma attack and Calleres stopped and ordered them from the vehicle.
.
Approximately 90 minutes after the shooting, Fresno police received reports of a man behaving erratically, yelling and knocking on doors near Peach and Butler avenues. Officers located Calleres in the 1700 block of South Karen Avenue. Police Chief Paco Balderrama said Calleres was incoherent and appeared possibly under the influence of drugs.
.
Police said Calleres resisted officers' attempts to detain him. Officers took him to the ground and used a Taser. Because of his size, officers connected three sets of handcuffs behind his back to restrain him. Contemporary reporting described Calleres as approximately six feet tall and 300 pounds.
.
According to Balderrama, Calleres initially remained conscious, talking and breathing after being restrained and attempted to kick officers. Police then noticed that he was developing medical problems, including difficulty breathing. He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m.
.
Fresno Police Department classified the death as an in-custody death because Calleres developed medical distress while handcuffed. The department's Homicide Unit opened an investigation into the death, including the officers' use of the Taser. The officers involved in the arrest were placed on leave.
.
The officers who used force against Calleres were not publicly identified in the contemporary reports located for this update. Without their identities, their prior shootings, Taser incidents, complaints, discipline and use-of-force histories cannot be reliably attributed.
