OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/22/2022, 32-year-old Brandon Richardson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Riverview Park along the Shreveport riverfront while Shreveport Police Department officers were responding to a report that a man was threatening to jump into the Red River. Police responded to the riverfront pavilion at approximately 10:00 a.m.
.
According to Shreveport police, Richardson was threatening to jump into the river when officers arrived. Police alleged that as officers approached him, Richardson produced a firearm and shot himself in the head. No police gunfire was reported.
.
Richardson was scheduled to appear in court that same day for jury selection in an attempted-murder trial. The Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office said he was charged with attempted second-degree murder stemming from a 01/17/2021 shooting involving his former intimate partner and mother of his child. Prosecutors alleged that during a child-custody exchange, Richardson shot the woman in the chest with a .22-caliber revolver after he did not want to return their child to her. Numerous people, including children, reportedly witnessed that shooting.
.
Richardson was also awaiting trial on charges of false imprisonment with a dangerous weapon and aggravated assault with a firearm. Prosecutors alleged those charges arose from the same incident after Richardson pointed the gun at another man and held both that man and the wounded woman at gunpoint before police arrived. The charges remained allegations and had not been adjudicated because Richardson died on the morning his trial was scheduled to begin.
.
The available police account indicates that the immediate reason officers approached Richardson at Riverview Park was the report that he was threatening to jump into the river. His pending criminal trial provides significant context for the circumstances that morning, but police were not initially dispatched to the riverfront to arrest him on those charges.
