OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/21/2022, 40-year-old Eric Johnson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a police and SWAT standoff at the Lake of the Woods apartment complex at 1894 Lakenoll Drive in Mount Healthy. His 6-year-old daughter, Iyla Johnson, was also found fatally shot inside the barricaded bedroom. Police concluded that Johnson killed his daughter and then himself.

The police encounter began at approximately 11:40 a.m. when Mount Healthy police were called to the apartment because of a dispute involving a custody exchange. Johnson would not allow Iyla to leave with her mother. Two officers entered the apartment in an effort to return the child to her mother.

As officers entered, they heard a gunshot from a second-floor bedroom. Officers went upstairs and attempted to enter the bedroom but found that Johnson had barricaded the door from inside. As officers attempted to force their way through the door, additional gunshots were heard. Police withdrew and requested the Hamilton County SWAT team.

SWAT surrounded the apartment and repeatedly attempted to establish communication with Johnson. After those attempts failed, SWAT officers entered the barricaded bedroom and found Johnson and Iyla suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were dead.

Mount Healthy Police Chief Vincent Demasi said the preliminary investigation indicated that Johnson shot and killed Iyla and then fatally shot himself. Police believed the first gunshot officers heard after arriving was the shot that killed Iyla.

Police reported that Johnson was a convicted felon and legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. His death occurred while police and SWAT were actively attempting to resolve the barricade and recover his daughter following the custody dispute.

Iyla's family described her as an energetic first grader who loved art, dancing, swimming and martial arts. Family members said Johnson and Iyla's mother had been together for more than 20 years and had three children together.
