OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 09/08/2022, Edinburg Police Department officers approached Robert Peña at a residence on the 1200 block of Harrison Avenue as part of a homicide investigation into the death of 28-year-old Maritza Idette Zamora of Mission, who had been found unresponsive the previous day inside an apartment on the 3700 block of Sarah Evans Street. When officers made contact, Peña ran inside the residence and barricaded himself in a bathroom. Police secured the perimeter. After a short time, officers entered and found Peña had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead after being discovered inside the residence.
Peña was identified by investigators as a person of interest in Zamora’s death. His father, Rogelio Ramirez Cortez, 61, was charged with murder, a first-degree felony, in connection with Zamora’s death. Authorities stated Cortez and Peña were both tied to the homicide investigation. Cortez was taken into custody.
