On 12/09/2022, the Honolulu Police Department responded to a barricade situation at a hotel located at 2280 Kuhio Avenue in Waikīkī after reports that a man had assaulted a woman and was armed inside a room. Officers evacuated nearby rooms and attempted to negotiate with Benjamin Moralez for several hours. Police reported that Moralez was armed with a knife and refused repeated commands to surrender. During the standoff, officers discharged their firearms and struck Moralez. He was pronounced dead following the shooting. The Honolulu Police Department conducted an internal review, and the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office later concluded that the use of deadly force was legally justified under Hawaii law.
