On 12/14/2022, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office and Hudson Police Department pursued a stolen pickup truck driven by Collin Mitchell Roberts after reports that he had attempted vehicle thefts and fired shots at a residence in Kersey, Colorado. The pursuit continued onto Interstate 76 near Exit 31 at Main Street in Hudson. Officers used a precision immobilization technique to stop the vehicle. During the encounter, police engaged him in a shootout. Roberts sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital, where he died. The Weld County Coroner determined that Roberts died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The 19th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team reviewed the shooting, and the Weld County District Attorney later concluded that the officer’s use of force was legally justified under Colorado law.
