OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/20/2023, at approximately 2:07 p.m., Amarillo Police Department officers went to the Relax Inn at 6030 Interstate 40 West to arrest 45-year-old Timothy R. Murray on a felony parole-violation warrant. Murray remained inside a hotel room and would not come out. Other people who had been inside the room exited safely.

Police attempted to negotiate with Murray, who initially communicated with officers but stopped responding after several hours. The Amarillo Police Department Critical Incident Response Team and negotiators responded as the encounter developed into a barricade and standoff.

Police fired a chemical agent into the hotel room in an attempt to force Murray outside. Officers subsequently heard several gunshots from inside the room. Police continued attempts to communicate with Murray but received no response.

The Critical Incident Response Team deployed a robot into the room. The robot opened a window, allowing police to send a drone inside. The drone located Murray unresponsive in the bathroom.

Police entered and found Murray dead in the bathroom from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Amarillo Police Department Criminal Investigations Division investigated the death.
